Varenne was the winningest trotting horse ever, winning 62 of his 73 starts. The horse won Elitloppet twice, in 2001 and 2002, as well as the Prix d'Amérique the same year. In total, Varenne earned the equivalent of around 52 million kronor.
"Last night he left us and the vet has determined that the cause of death was a sudden heart attack. We are devastated to have received the news and want to remember him together with all his fans," writes Varenne's official Instagram account.
Varenne was trained by Finnish trotting trainer Jori Turja and driven by Italian driver Giampaolo Minnucci.
