France's president Emmanuel Macron has given Sébastien Lecornu – who resigned from the prime minister post on Monday – 48 hours to clear up the political crisis.

Lecornu announced his resignation on Monday morning, the day after a new French government was presented. But at the request of Macron, he has agreed to hold "final discussions with the political forces, for the country's stability", he writes on X.

"I will inform the head of state on Wednesday evening about whether this is possible or not, so that he can draw all necessary conclusions", writes Lecornu.

The negotiations with representatives of Macron's fragile political coalition begin according to Le Monde on Tuesday morning

If Lecornu does not succeed in the time-limited task, the president promises to take "his responsibility", the newspaper writes. This may mean another election, according to Politico.
