On Friday, the 74-year-old was received by his family when he landed in Beirut. At the airport, dozens of people also gathered with Palestinian flags and flags of the country's communist party to welcome him.

Abdallah was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987 for aiding and abetting the murder of an American and an Israeli diplomat. He was the leader of a small militant left-wing pro-Palestinian group that was believed to be behind several terrorist attacks in France during the 80s.

Most life prisoners in France are released after 30 years, but the US has resisted in the case of Abdallah.
