Speaking at the UN General Assembly on Saturday, Lavrov also said that “the threat to Russian security will be eliminated and peaceful life will return.” The foreign minister reiterated Moscow’s official position that the war effort and invasion are a “special military operation.”
Lavrov also claimed that European countries are preventing attempts to hold peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.
Europe is doing everything it can to prevent negotiations that the (President Donald) Trump administration is interested in, Lavrov claimed without supporting his argument.
Sergey Lavrov also met with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in a meeting on the sidelines of the General Assembly's official programme. Wadephul had then conveyed the German government's sharp call to Moscow to "leave the dangerous path of escalation." Germany accuses Russia of being behind recent attempts to attack the airport in the German city of Leipzig, among other things.
It was the first time the foreign ministers of the two countries met since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
