Nelson Haase Mazzei was one of seven former military officers convicted in 2023 of torturing and murdering Victor Jara shortly after the coup d'état in Chile in 1973.
Haase Mazzei, now 80, went underground after being convicted in 2023 but was arrested in the Los Lagos region on Sunday. Five of his accomplices are in prison, while the sixth took his own life shortly after the verdict was announced.
Jara was part of the political and musical movement Nueva canción chilena, which was suppressed by the Pinochet regime after the coup. Jara was tortured and murdered with 44 shots five days after Pinochet took power.
