Varberg Municipality says on its website that the drinking water supply is in a critical situation.
"If you have tap water, use it only for food, drink and hygiene," it says.
A large leak occurred in the main pipeline on Tuesday afternoon, reports Hallands Nyheter. Many residents are expected to run out of tap water on Wednesday, and tanker trucks have been sent to locations where the public can collect water.
One high school has sent all its students home, and several other schools are asking parents to pick up their children earlier. There is no forecast for when the leak might be fixed.
