A private individual has found an unusually large silver treasure from early medieval times. The treasure was found in the Stockholm area and the County Administrative Board's archaeologists are now working on analyzing the find.

This is about a well-preserved silver treasure with coins from the late 1100s, based on the fact that coins from Knut Eriksson's reign have been found. Some of the coins are minted with the text "Kanutus", which is the name Knut in Latin. Several of the coins are rare so-called "bishop coins", which were manufactured for a bishop.

"This is likely one of the largest silver treasures from the beginning of the Middle Ages that has been found in Sweden. We do not yet know exactly how many coins there are, but I think it may be up to twenty thousand", says Sofia Andersson, antiquarian at the County Administrative Board, in a press release.

The treasure weighs a total of six kilos and consists mostly of silver coins, but also silver rings, pendants and pearls that were placed in a copper cauldron. The treasure was found when a person was digging for metal scraps at their summer cottage.

The County Administrative Board is waiting to disclose the exact location of the find until the investigations are complete.

"The finder acted completely correctly by contacting us at the County Administrative Board. According to the Cultural Environment Act, the person who finds an ancient find of silver or a deposit find is required to offer the state to redeem it for payment", says Sofia Andersson.
