Care for cardiovascular disease must become more equal, according to the government. The National Board of Health and Welfare will now develop a national action plan. Today, for example, there are large differences in survival after cardiac arrest, says Minister of Health Elisabet Lann (KD).

Similar to the national cancer strategy, the government wants to have a comprehensive structure for the care of people with cardiovascular disease. Around two million people are affected by some type of such disease in Sweden today.

According to evaluations, the cancer strategy has contributed to increased survival and reduced regional differences. It includes recommendations that guide how healthcare should work from suspected cancer to palliative care and rehabilitation.

The National Board of Health and Welfare and the Medical Products Agency are now to develop proposals for a national action plan to strengthen equality also in cardiovascular diseases. For example, there are large differences in how long a patient needs to wait between visits to primary care and contact with a specialist clinic.

Primary care will play a major role, as most people first come to the health center with their complaints.

We have a concern in primary care that is undersized, which is why a transition to close care is underway. It is a challenge and more staff and more resources are needed to meet care needs early. Early detection increases the likelihood of survival and reduces costs in the long run, says Lann.

Rehabilitation and quality of life are also highlighted as important in the plan.

It is not just about survival, but about quality of life and good treatment.

The assignment will be reported on in 2028.
