Lakers have been owned by the same family since 1979 when Jerry Buss bought both Lakers, including the then home arena and the NHL team LA Kings for 67.5 million dollars.
When the family now sells a majority of their ownership share, the price tag is staggering 10 billion dollars, equivalent to just under 97 billion kronor.
The money comes from Mark Walter, CEO and chairman of the holding company TWG Global, who has been a minority owner of the club since 2021 but will now take over the majority ownership. He and his company have previously invested in, among other things, the Premier League club Chelsea.
”Lakers fans should be ecstatic”, writes club legend Magic Johnson on social media.
Johnson is a business partner with Walter and a close friend of the club's chairman Jeanie Buss.
The Buss family will continue to own 15 percent of Lakers and Jeanie Buss will continue as the club's chairman.
