The background was deep dissatisfaction among Rayo Vallecano supporters with chairman Raúl Martín Presa, who has led the Madrid club since 2011.
The match against Athletic Bilbao was Rayo Vallecano’s first at their home stadium, Vallecas, this season. The stadium had previously been closed for security reasons, and Rayo had played its first home matches at Leganés’ home ground.
