Spanish football league La Liga has cancelled its plans to play a league match in the USA. The decision has prompted the league's chairman Javier Tebas to react. ”A lost opportunity for Spanish football”, he writes on X.

On December 20, Villarreal were to face the championship team Barcelona on "home ground" in Miami, USA.

The plans, however, met with strong criticism and on Monday evening, the league announced that the US plans are cancelled.

A decision that Javier Tebas is not satisfied with.

"Today, Spanish football has lost an opportunity to develop, be seen in the world and strengthen its future. One invokes the defense of "tradition" from a narrow and provincial view, at the same time as the real traditions in European football are threatened by the decisions made by the governing institutions, decisions that year after year destroy the national leagues", writes the league's chairman on X.

Tebas states at the same time that he does not give up the plans entirely.

"Spanish football deserves to look forward with ambition, not fear. We continue to try. This time we were very close", he writes.
