Just five days ago, it was announced that Finch would not be able to join the band's planned farewell tour in the US this fall as she had been diagnosed with an aggressive tumour.
"We are devastated to announce that our partner, sister, daughter and friend Jennifer Precious Finch has died," relatives wrote on social media.
L7 formed in Los Angeles in the mid-1980s. With songs like "Pretend We're Dead," they had their heyday during the grunge wave of the early 1990s and are often mentioned in connection with the feminist riot grrrl movement.
Finch was also a prolific photographer who documented the punk scene in Los Angeles from the mid-1980s onwards.
