"Kyiv is under ballistic attack. Take cover," Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram shortly after midnight.
Several fires broke out and, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a total of seven districts in the city were affected.
"18 buildings, a school, the Lithuanian embassy and infrastructure facilities have been damaged. At present, it is known that nine people have been killed in the attack. My condolences to their families and loved ones," Zelenskyy writes on X.
Sweden's Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) condemns it as another Russian "terrible attack" on Ukrainian soil.
"As Russia continues its illegal war of aggression and shows that they have no interest in peace or negotiations, our resolve grows stronger. We need more pressure on Russia and more support for Ukraine," she writes in a post on X.
“We stand in solidarity with Ukraine and with Lithuania.”
