Massive power outages are underway in Ukraine due to a technical fault, the country's energy minister says. In the capital, Kyiv, metro services have been halted due to an emergency power outage.

Metro services were suspended due to low voltage in the network, Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram, adding that the stations have backup power and can be used as shelters.

According to Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal, widespread power outages are occurring across the country. A "technical fault" has caused a giant power line between facilities in neighboring Romania and Moldova and in western and central Ukraine to shut down, he wrote on the same platform.

The power outage hits especially hard as the winter in Ukraine has brought cold temperatures of around -20 degrees Celsius at night in large parts of the country.

According to US President Donald Trump, belligerent Russia has agreed to a week-long pause in its attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says in a video on X that Ukraine has not carried out any attacks on Russian energy facilities in the past 24 hours.

We are ready to show restraint, says Zelenskyy.
