The guitar that Kurt Cobain used when recording "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is to be sold - again.

The electric guitar - a Fender Mustang - is the most expensive item in American billionaire Jim Irsay's collection of guitars and other instruments that previously belonged to John Lennon, Johnny Cash and John Coltrane, among others. The other guitars are expected to fetch up to 9 million each.

Kurt Cobain's guitar, on the other hand, was bought by Jim Irsay for the equivalent of SEK 44 million in 2022. After Irsay's death in 2025, it is now expected to fetch up to SEK 45 million at an auction in New York in March, according to Amelia Walker at the auction house Christie's.

"It is a talisman for people of my generation," she says.

Correction: In an earlier version, it was not clear that it involves instruments other than guitars.
