The municipality says in a press release that the fortress's decay threatens both cultural and historical values and the safety of visitors.
According to calculations by the State Property Board, renovations worth around SEK 500 million are needed, followed by annual maintenance of between SEK 2 million and SEK 4 million.
It's a lot of money, but nothing compared to the alternative. Within a year or so the fortress is at risk of collapsing; then it will be a completely different amount, says the chairman of the municipal board, Jesper Eneroth (S), to Dagens Nyheter.
