But he is also hoping for big, long-term and positive messages about support for Ukraine from the summit, where US President Donald Trump is expected to be the main figure. The meeting begins with a dinner on Tuesday evening at Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's mega-palace in Ankara.

The wind is turning

Regarding Ukraine, the Prime Minister sees signs that the wind has turned in line with the Russians' enormous losses, the frozen front and the Ukrainians' successful drone attacks deep inside Russia. Also with regard to the US and President Trump's view of which of the two presidents now appears to be, to use Trumpian language, a "loser" - Russia's Vladimir Putin or Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The latter is at the dinner in Ankara.

The signals ahead of this meeting are basically good, says the Prime Minister.

Zelenskyy has appealed for more air defence capable of shooting down the ballistic missiles that Russia is increasingly using.

It is unclear whether there will be any specific announcements about this in Ankara. Kristersson says that there simply isn't much more sought-after air defence in stock.

There are no more Patriots to give away, right?

No.

Existential question

At a press conference after NATO's announcement in Ankara about the intention to purchase up to ten surveillance planes from Saab, Globaleye, Kristersson was asked why Sweden is investing so much money and effort in Ukraine.

It is an existential question, most clearly for all countries that lie within what could be perceived by Russia as a sphere of interest.

And he sees it as Sweden's task to make other NATO countries, without close contact with Russia, realise that Russia is the defining threat to Europe.

Does he himself believe that Ukraine is on the verge of winning the war?

- Right now we see that Russia is attacking Kyiv more. They probably want to try to prove to Europe that you will get tired first.

But with the 90 billion euros in EU loans, I think we have just proven to Russia that we are not going to tire first.

Risk of quarrel

And Donald Trump's anger at NATO countries that cannot demonstrate the armament, willingness and ability to reach the equivalent of five percent of GDP in defence spending by 2035? The goal was set at last year's summit in The Hague.

- Different countries will come out of such an examination in slightly different ways. I think that will be noticeable at the meeting, you shouldn't expect a courtesy meeting.
