Clashing over the economy: "Ridiculous"

While the opposition quarrels, the governing parties get things done, claims Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in a party leader debate. The Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson, in turn, criticizes the government's economic policy. Ridiculous, responds Kristersson.

The economy is being hotly debated in the party leader debate in parliament. S leader Magdalena Andersson says that the Swedish economy is in Europe's bottom tier and accuses Ulf Kristersson of being complacent.

If there had been an Olympic Games event in complacency, the medals would have hung heavily around Ulf Kristersson's neck.

The Prime Minister says that the government is addressing inflation and is now solving the economic problems that the Social Democrats left behind. He points out that the S did not get their budget through when they were in government and calls Andersson's outburst "ridiculous".

We're working around the clock to solve the problems.

"Backing into the future"

Unemployment is now the highest in three years, according to new figures from the Employment Agency, and the Left Party is also highlighting economic policy.

We built up a strong welfare system. Now we're backing into the future, says V leader Nooshi Dadgostar.

We left-wingers saw it coming – that the neoliberal project was doomed to fail.

KD leader Ebba Busch responds that it takes time to clean up after a red-green government.

Raise your voice as much as you want – but actions speak much louder than your words.

"Completely incomprehensible"

Another major issue in the debate is migration and crime policy.

The Tidö parties want to change the constitution so that citizenship for gang leaders and individuals who commit system-threatening crimes that harm Sweden's vital interests could be revoked. Something that S, MP, V, and C have not agreed to.

You can't cope when it comes to making decisions and doing what's required, says SD leader Jimmie Åkesson to the S leader during a party leader debate.

Why should Swedish gang leaders get to keep their Swedish passports? In my world, it's completely incomprehensible.

Andersson says that she is in favor of such legislation but that the proposal for a constitutional amendment that was on the table was too broad.

If you invite a gang criminal to your wedding, maybe you should lose your job, but you shouldn't lose your citizenship, she says, referring to the scandal at Åkesson's wedding last autumn.

Ulf Kristersson holds S accountable for not backing the proposal and accuses the opposition of not getting things done.

Against us stands a left-wing alternative that quarrels about everything, says Kristersson.
