"These are extremely serious suspicions, extremely serious. I think the Swedish people feel that way," Kristersson told TT during his election tour in Jönköping.
The SD member left parliament and his party duties on Tuesday. He has also been suspended from the party while the police investigation continues.
It was SVT that first reported that a member of parliament was being investigated for child pornography crimes.
Swedish police are said to have become aware of the suspected crimes after a tip was received from the American organization NCMEC. The organization works to combat the sexual exploitation of children globally and sends thousands of tips to Swedish police every year.
Ulf Kristersson points out that so far these are just suspicions and that it is now up to the judiciary to do its job.
"But if this turns out to be correct, I hope and expect a very severe punishment for this," he says.
According to Kristersson, the Moderates' collaboration with the Sweden Democrats is not affected by what happened.
"The Sweden Democrats must answer for their members."
"Our political cooperation is working well. We have proven over almost four years that we can solve problems, set a new course on very important issues, and have a stable government that gets things done, all of which I intend to continue."
