"Germany is Sweden's most important trading partner, and is close to us both geographically and in terms of values. I have had good cooperation with Chancellor Scholz and look forward to continued cooperation with the new German government and the next Chancellor for a safer, more secure and more competitive Europe", he writes in a message to TT.

It is Friedrich Merz's conservative CDU that is heading for victory in Sunday's election.

Even NATO's Secretary-General Mark Rutte announces that he looks forward to working with Merz, according to the news agency AFP. Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre also looks forward to the cooperation, he tells NTB.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulates Merz and also wants to work with Germany to strengthen Europe, he writes on X.

USA's President Donald Trump writes in capital letters on his platform Truth Social that it "is a great day for Germany and the United States led by a gentleman named Donald J Trump".

Several from Europe's far-right congratulate the nationalist AFD, which appears to become the second-largest party with around 20 percent of the votes.

"What a great electoral success!" writes the French debater and provocateur Éric Zemmour.

The Austrian right-wing populist extremist party FPÖ's (Freedom Party) controversial party leader Herbert Kickl also congratulates AFD and says that people no longer want to tolerate "illegal mass immigration", reports DPA.
