The uncertain global situation has prompted Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) to convene the National Security Council on Saturday.

"Right now there is a lot happening in the world. The government's primary task is to protect Swedish interests and the safety of Swedes, and we are doing that," Kristersson writes in a comment to TT.

The fact that it will not take place until Saturday is due to the hectic schedules of Kristersson and several other ministers. The Prime Minister is in Davos and then travels on to the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday.

"To regroup after recent travel and shuttle diplomacy and align our views on major security issues, I have called a meeting of the National Security Council on Saturday. The meeting will be about the government's work to strengthen Sweden in a turbulent world," Kristersson writes.

In addition to the Prime Minister, who chairs the meeting, Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard (M), Minister for Defence Pål Jonson (M), Minister for Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M), Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin (M) and Minister for Finance Elisabeth Svantesson (M) will also participate. Minister for Trade and Industry Ebba Busch (KD) and Minister for Education Simona Mohamsson (L) will also participate because they are party leaders.

National Security Advisor Niclas Kvarnström is also participating in the meeting.

The council meets regularly, but extraordinary meetings are rarer. For example, this has happened in response to the war in Ukraine, and all party leaders have also been invited to discuss gang crime.

Depending on the issue at hand, heads of government agencies, such as the national police chief, may also participate. However, this is not planned this time.
