Donald Trump's latest statements on Ukraine are in line with Russia's view of the situation, the Kremlin says. The US president is hailed by Moscow as "the only one who understands" the war. Ukraine is expected to submit an updated peace proposal to the US shortly.

Trump's comments in this week's infamous interview with Politico - in which the US president called European leaders "weak" and claimed that Russia has the upper hand in the war - were "very important", the Russian power headquarters Kremlin spokesman told reporters on Wednesday.

In many ways, in terms of NATO membership, territories and how Ukraine is losing land, it is in line with our view, says Dmitry Peskov.

“Got an answer”

Trump is also praised by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, reports the Ansa news agency. In the upper house of the Russian parliament, the Federation Council, Lavrov claims that Trump is “the only Western leader” who understands war.

Immediately after taking office in January, he began to show understanding for the reasons that made the war in Ukraine inevitable, he says.

The Foreign Minister also claims that Russia does not want war with Europe, but that Moscow is ready to respond if the EU sends forces to Ukraine or decides to use frozen Russian state assets to help Ukraine.

"We already have a ready answer," Lavrov said, according to the EFE news agency.

Submitting peace proposals

The two major stumbling blocks in the ongoing peace negotiations have long been the issues of land and security guarantees for Ukraine.

Kiev has expressed its displeasure with parts of the peace proposal presented by the White House. An updated draft consisting of 20 points will be submitted to the United States in the "near future", Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday.

“We continue to communicate with all of our partners daily, virtually around the clock, to identify feasible and realistic steps to end the war,” he writes in a post on X.

Spoke with Trump

French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke with US President Donald Trump about Ukraine on Wednesday, the French presidential office said.

The conversation was an attempt to "move forward" and lasted 40 minutes, according to Macron.

On Thursday, Ukrainian partners within the “Coalition of the Willing” will hold a virtual meeting. Security guarantees for Ukraine are on the agenda, according to the French government.
