"We have seen President Trump's statement. We think it is a good idea, a good initiative. We are in contact with the Americans," spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to AFP.

Trump's remarks came on Monday. He claimed that both Russia and Ukraine had agreed not to attack each other's energy facilities, after he complained in the days before that the attacks had caused diesel prices to rise. However, neither Kyiv nor Moscow confirmed that an agreement had been reached.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy replied that the proposal is de facto Ukraine's, but that it applies if Russia agrees to it.

“Ukraine is not convinced that Russia has any desire to follow an agreement,” he wrote on Telegram.

Russia imposed restrictions on diesel exports in July to address the country's fuel shortages, caused by Ukrainian attacks on its energy facilities.
