Krauss and Krunegård sang for Brunnsgatan 4

Theater Brunnsgatan Four in Stockholm is threatened with closure when the rent is doubled. We literally have no money, says artistic director Martina Montelius.

Therefore, a support gala, Brunnsgalan, has been arranged with artists such as Annika Norlin, Ellen Krauss, Lars Winnerbäck, and Markus Krunegård. The proceeds will go towards building new seats for the theater audience.

That these fantastic people are willing to do this and come here and play, I think it's incredible, says Martina Montelius.

Lacking a Stage

She shows around the basement venue with a black-painted concrete floor and low ceiling height. Before actor Allan Edwall transformed it into a theater in 1986, it was a potato cellar.

Since the turn of the year, Teater Brunnsgatan has lacked the components that make up the image of a traditional theater, not just audience seats but also a proper stage.

The ceiling beam was about to give up. In the end, it was impossible to avoid a renovation, says Montelius.

The result will be almost double the rent going forward, while the grants for continuing to operate will remain at the same level.

Even though the housing association that owns the building has paid for the renovation, Teater Brunnsgatan will also have to rebuild the interior on their own.

We will, of course, do it as cheaply as possible. But we are not the only ones in this situation, with enormous pressure to pay sky-high rents, says Martina Montelius and continues:

My political proposal is that the city buys the premises and rents them out instead, so that we can use our grants to produce more theater.

"Holds Hope"

Tonight's husband Amason compares artists such as Hannes, Jaqe, Markus Krunegård, and Melissa Horn. A total of 100 tickets have been released, and the small venue, which usually has 80 seats, quickly becomes crowded.

The idea is that we will get some attention to this issue through the support gala. I hold hope that there may be people out there who have ideas and proposals, not necessarily just donating money, but there are many ways to contribute, says Martina Montelius.

A private theater run by an idealistic association. Founded by Allan Edwall in 1986. After the actor's passing, Kristina Lugn took over and continued in his spirit.

Since 2011, Teater Brunnsgatan has been run by her daughter Martina Montelius, now together with producer Elvira Fridell.

Artists who performed at Brunnsgalan: Amason, Lars Winnerbäck, Markus Krunegård, Melissa Horn, Little Jinder, Ellen Krauss, Alba August, Hannes, Esther, Jaqe, and Annika Norlin & Jonas Teglund.
