Jin, the oldest member of the K-pop group BTS, is to be one of the Olympic torchbearers at the Paris Games.
The 31-year-old singer, who recently completed an 18-month-long military service, will represent South Korea in the torch relay and hopes, according to a statement, to spread the message of "harmony and peace".
The torchbearers will move across different historical sites in the host country, but no further details have been revealed yet.
BTS shocked their fans around the world two years ago when the seven members announced that they would do their military service and thus take a break in the career that has made them one of the world's largest boy bands.
Almost all South Korean men are forced to do military service for at least 18 months – even international pop stars – and Jin began his military service at a South Korean military camp at the end of 2022.
The other group members Jung Kook, V, Jimin, Suga, RM, and J-Hope have also been called up to the military, but several of them have released music as solo artists over the past year.
BTS has announced that the group can reunite for the first time in 2025 when all have fulfilled their duty.
