Kozo Tashima Enters FIFA Presidential Race to Test Federation’s Integrity

Kozo Tashima says he is running in the FIFA election to test the federation’s integrity. “I see this as a test of whether FIFA can clean up its own ranks.”

On Thursday, 68-year-old Japanese official Kozo Tashima announced that he intends to run for president of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).

Under FIFA rules, a candidate must have the support of at least five of the 211 member associations. It is unclear whether Tashima has that support.

At present, there is no official challenger to scandal-plagued Gianni Infantino ahead of the presidential election in March.

“The worst thing would be if he [Infantino] were allowed to continue without an election being held,” says Tashima, honorary president of the Japan Football Association and a member of the FIFA Council.
