"Almost half of Kyiv is without electricity following new large-scale Russian attacks," says Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa. Meanwhile, temperatures in the Ukrainian capital are below minus 10C.

“After this attack, 5,635 buildings lack heating,” writes Mayor Vitaliy Klychko on Telegram.

He is referring, among other things, to the large apartment buildings that Kyiv has had thousands of since Soviet times. They are home to hundreds of thousands of people.

Klychko points out that most of the houses now affected have recently had electricity, heating and water restored after being without them since another major Russian attack earlier in January.

According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia's attack consisted of "a significant number of ballistic and cruise missiles" and "over 300 attack drones."
