Klæbo's Golden Streak: On the Verge of Breaking Northug's Record

Three gold medals out of three possible. Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, 28, dominates the World Championship in cross-country skiing on home ground – and is close to breaking Northug's gold record. The chance is there. We'll see, he says to NRK.

Gold in the sprint. Gold in the skiathlon. And now, gold in the distance race.

Johannes Høsflot Klæbo has won all the races so far in Trondheim – and now has twelve World Championship golds in his career.

I had dreamed about it, but at the same time thought it would be tough. But it has gone smoothly so far, he says to NRK.

This is what I have trained and lived in celibacy for. Now I finally get results in a distance race at a championship and it tastes incredibly good, he continues.

Now Klæbo is two wins away from breaking the men's record for the number of World Championship golds from his fellow countryman Petter Northug, who has 13 golds.

The chance is there. We'll see. We'll take one day at a time, that's what I've said all along. But "so far so good".

Northug himself is convinced that the 28-year-old will break the record.

"He will get five-six golds this World Championship. He will handle the pressure, the skiing and will do everything required to win", Northug writes in a text message to NTB.

Klæbo has three gold chances left: The team sprint on Wednesday, the relay on Thursday and finally the 50km race on Saturday.

TT: Can he even go "clean" and take six World Championship golds in Trondheim?

That would be sick. But he impresses greatly, says Swedish competitor William Poromaa after the distance race.

  1. Petter Northug, Norway, 13 golds.

  2. Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, Norway, 12 golds.

  3. Bjørn Dæhlie, Norway, 9 golds.

  4. Gunde Svan, Sweden, 7 golds.

  5. Thomas Alsgaard, Norway, 6 golds.
