Applications have been submitted to authorities in the state of Utah and to the US Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
Klarna has previously operated with a banking licence in Europe since 2017 and has sold its banking services to US users with local partners.
Klarna Bank USA is planned to be led by banker Gary Harding and be headquartered in Utah. It would be run with its own independent board of directors, management team and internal controls, according to the press release.
