The 28-year-old lost his lead during Sunday's final round at Leopard Creek CC in South Africa, and had to settle for a shared second place.
Kinhult went out on the final lap with a two-stroke lead, but lost his grip already on the first seven holes, including two bogeys and a double bogey.
Four bogeys, a double bogey, and four birdies gave two over par for the day and –12 total. On the final hole, Kinhult still had a chance to reach a playoff for the win, but needed to sink a long eagle putt. It became a birdie.
Instead, home player Shaun Norris won, making a brilliant final round, five under par, and won with a one-stroke margin ahead of Kinhult, South African Ryan van Velzen, and Englishman John Parry.
Marcus Kinhult's only win so far on the European Tour came in the British Masters 2019.
