King Harald's sarcophagus in the Akershus Castle mausoleum was displayed on Friday, as were pictures from the crypt and the three coffins now standing there.
King Harald's sarcophagus is made of olivine, a green silica mineral of gem quality. The rock was "pressed forward by the forces that shaped Norway" and binds carbon dioxide in "love for nature and care for future generations."
The sarcophagus has been designed as a ship with a "rounded bottom", the Royal Norwegian Palace announced in a press release, noting that it was inspired by King Harald's close relationship with the sea and history:
“The motif forms a line back in time to the ship burials of ancient times, where the ship carried the deceased on a final journey to another world.”
