"It is with deep sadness that we announce that His Majesty King Harald has passed away today," the royal house wrote when the death announcement came.
King Harald died at 6:35 a.m. on Friday.
The government then met with the country's new king, Haakon VIII. Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra also attended the meeting.
King Haakon has chosen the same motto as his father, grandfather and great-grandfather - "Everything for Norway".
All the country's church bells rang at noon and a mourning salute was fired. The Norwegian government declared a national mourning period.
Moved to the court chapel
In the evening, crowds of people gathered in the pouring rain to follow the cortege that would carry King Harald on his final journey from the National Hospital through Oslo to the palace. According to Oslo police, over 13,000 mourners had gathered at the palace grounds.
Haakon, Queen Mette-Marit, Ingrid Alexandra, Queen Sonja and the rest of the royal family were in attendance during the transport.
A large number of people along the road were filming and taking photos with their mobile phones.
The coffin will first be placed in the Red Salon at the palace, and later moved to the court chapel, where it will remain until the day of the funeral, writes NTB.
The royal regalia - including the crown and sceptre - have been moved to Oslo and will be placed on the coffin. The chapel will be open at certain times so that those who wish can say a final farewell to the king at the coffin.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre gave a national speech on Friday about what King Harald meant to Norway. He said he shared his strongest memory of the king with the Norwegian people:
The generosity, the warmth, the humor, the presence he had on the nation's great days and on the dark days.
Turbulent years
The 89-year-old King Harald has been treated for hemolytic anemia, a form of anemia, in recent weeks. He was admitted to Rikshospitalet on August 17 and over the weekend it was announced that the king received antibiotics for a bacterial infection in the blood.
Several family members have been watching by his side in the hospital.
Harald V has been king since 1991. His health began to falter in 2024, when he fell ill during a trip to Malaysia and had a pacemaker implanted.
The last few years have been turbulent for the Norwegian royal family, as Mette-Marit's lung transplant and contacts with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have been in focus, along with the rape trial of Marius Borg Høiby, her son from a previous relationship.
