Denmark has received its first battery-powered commuter trains. King Frederik himself took the reins to officially inaugurate the line.

Battery-powered trains are an environmentally friendly alternative for railways that do not have an electricity supply, such as the current commuter routes in western Denmark. The new trains from German Siemens will run on routes around Holstebro near the Danish North Sea coast.

"I am proud to be here and to have a means of transport with green credentials in place," said Head of State Frederik to Danish TV2 after driving the train a short distance in Lemvig.

Seven battery trains can now replace eight diesel trains in the area. The current Siemens model is already running in similar traffic in Germany.
