In state-controlled North Korean media, images are shown of dictator Kim Jong-Un visiting a shipyard where giant submarines and other warships are produced.

The submarine, which is capable of carrying and launching strategic cruise missiles, is described as a potential major security threat to South Korea and the USA.

According to a South Korean expert, the submarine can likely carry around ten missiles. It is likely intended for missiles with the capacity to carry nuclear warheads.

It would absolutely pose a threat to us and to the USA, says submarine expert Moon Keun-Sik at Hanyang University in Seoul.

According to Moon, it is likely that North Korea received technical assistance from Russia to build the nuclear reactor to be used in the submarine. In return, Russia has received North Korean weapons and soldiers for its war against Ukraine, he notes.
