The person, a Kenyan citizen living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, reportedly died in a Nairobi hospital on Monday after travelling to Kenya via Uganda from an area of the country heavily affected by Ebola.
This is the first fatal Ebola case recorded in Kenya, the newspaper The Star reports.
The fact that the person travelled by both bus and plane has raised concerns about the risk of further spread of the disease, which has claimed more than 4,000 lives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo over the past year. The country’s health authorities are now on heightened alert, the AP news agency reports.
Ebola is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids from infected people. The disease can cause fever, vomiting and diarrhoea, and, in severe cases, bleeding into the skin and internal organs.
