The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., will be closed for a two-year renovation, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Truth Social.

The shutdown is scheduled to take effect on US Independence Day, July 4. It is unclear how extensive the renovation will ultimately be, but the president describes it as a "complete rebuild."

Trump has previously added his own name to the building's facade, among other things.

"I have concluded that the quickest way to bring the Trump Kennedy Center to the highest level of success, beauty and greatness is to cease entertainment operations for a period of approximately two years," Trump wrote.

Before the renovation can begin, the board of directors must approve it. However, Trump himself is the chairman of the board and has handpicked its members, according to AFP.

Since the board was reorganized, several prominent artists and shows have canceled performances at the center, including the musical "Hamilton."

The Washington National Opera recently announced that it would be leaving the Kennedy Center, which has been its home since the 1970s.
