The announcement comes after a judge in May ordered Trump's name to be removed and also ruled that the renovation decision was not sufficiently substantiated.

But the board, appointed by Trump, has now decided that the renovation will go ahead, which means a partial closure for two years, and that the facade will be given an addition: "Restored and renovated by President Donald J Trump."

Joyce Beatty, a Democratic congresswoman and former board member who fought against the changes, sees the new decisions as a way to bypass both the court and Congress.

"I will continue to fight for this beloved national monument," she says.

It is unclear whether Thursday's board decision will lead to a new round in court or not.
