The issue of flavored snus is creating division between the Christian Democrats and the youth union KDU. The party wants to ban it – but the KDU calls the proposal populist, reports TV4 Nyheterna.

The party leadership wants to ban flavors and colorful packaging on both white snus and regular tobacco snus.

"We want to ban the taste, appearance and sales that are specifically aimed at young people. Nicotine that looks like candy, tastes like candy and is sold in candy stores," says Health Minister Elisabet Lann (KD) to TV4 Nyheterna, adding that it is about protecting children and young people.

KDU leader Louise Hammargren, on the other hand, claims that snus has reduced the proportion of smokers and reduced deaths from lung cancer.

This is a recipe for success for better public health that I think the Christian Democrats should pursue, and not these more populist proposals in an attempt to moralize, she says.

The snus issue is expected to be one of the contentious issues when the KD now gathers for the national assembly in Linköping. Among the Tidö parties, both SD, M and L say no to a ban on flavored snus.
