Anyone who gives birth to a child will receive SEK 36,900 deposited into their premium pension account, which, according to KD's calculations, would give a mother of two children SEK 700 more per month from the day she retires.

This proposal is a recognition of the importance of childbearing for our future, says Busch.

Want to scrap pension rights

The reform will be financed by scrapping pension rights for students. The KD leader justifies the priority by saying that those who study mostly benefit financially.

"On the other hand, becoming a parent, giving birth to a child as a woman, you are punished financially for that. And then we think it is a fairer distribution that those who are punished by something are compensated through a mother's bonus in the pension system," she tells TT on site on Hönö in the Gothenburg archipelago, where she gave the summer speech.

However, not everyone shares the Christian Democrats' view. The Swedish Academic Association Saco points out that certain education programmes today, not least those dominated by women, already involve financial losses and that abolishing pension rights would mean a double punishment.

Ebba Busch counters that this is fundamentally due to the fact that professions dominated by women have lower salaries.

The solution to that is that we value work that happens in female-dominated professions more. That's the big solution.

“Paying a high price”

She also doesn't have much to spare for the argument that a pension bonus of this kind would provide incentives for women to stay at home to a greater extent than today.

It's quite obvious that even if you're only gone for nine months and then work full-time, women still pay a high price with their mental health, with their physical health, she says and continues:

And I think it's obvious that there's a correlation between that and the career choices you make that affect your finances. That's why we want to compensate in the pension system.
