The leaders of the two countries sat next to each other at a bilateral meeting held in Omsk on Saturday.
"How to get out of this situation? No one knows, because both sides have established their positions. But on the other hand, there is a moment and an opportunity to freeze (the conflict)," Tokayev said during the meeting.
Tokayev then sharpened his tone:
It's a shame, young people are dying. All this has to stop.
Kazakhstan is allied with Russia, but the government in Astana has never expressed support for the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
