It was on live television on Sunday that Katz announced that Avi Bluth, commander of Israel's forces in the West Bank, would be fired.
Israel's military opposed the statement - a minister does not have the authority to make that kind of decision unilaterally, Israeli media reported. The country's prime minister, Netanyahu, called Katz's remarks "indecent."
On Monday night, Katz officially reversed course on the Bluth issue - after meeting with political representatives of Israeli settlers in the West Bank.
Bluth is performing his duties “well,” Katz’s office wrote in a statement, The Times of Israel reports.
Israel will hold national elections on October 27 this year.
