”I hope you get cancer”.

That was the message Katie Boulter received on Instagram during the French Championship.

Another person threatened to vandalize her grandmother's grave and urged Boulter to buy coffins and candles for her entire family.

I think it's increasing in number and in what people can say. I don't think there are any limits to what people can write now, says the 28-year-old and continues:

It shows how vulnerable we are. You never really know if they are nearby or if they know where you live or similar.

Boulter suspects that many of those who write have lost money on her matches. Since she receives threats regardless of whether she wins or loses.

The connection between betting and digital threats and harassment has been debated in recent years. Many believe that gaming companies and the companies that own the platforms, for example Meta which owns Facebook and Instagram, do too little to stop the development.
