The 28-year-old won the second set to level the score at 1-1. He gained a slight advantage in the third - but lost, and 24-year-old Yukiya Uda won it 11-8. Uda then secured the victory 11-9 in the fourth.
Star and world number five Truls Möregårdh enters the tournament on Thursday when he faces American Kanak Jha.
