Kaja Kallas, EU foreign affairs chief, urges European countries to take a greater role in NATO cooperation.

"As the US sets its sights beyond Europe, NATO must become more European to maintain its strength," Kallas said in a speech in Brussels on Wednesday.

The words come after Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte received harsh criticism from many after dismissing Europe's ability to defend itself without the United States, during an appearance in the European Parliament on Monday.

"No, dear Mark Rutte. Europeans can and must take responsibility for their own security," writes French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on X, for example.

Kaja Kallas, for her part, emphasizes the importance of continued collaboration.

The United States will continue to be Europe's partner and ally. But Europe must adapt to a new reality, says the prime minister.
