She herself is what could be called “LA nobility,” with Cindy Crawford as her mother and billionaire Rande Gerber as her father. But she doesn’t think there are many similarities between Hollywood today and how it was in the 1980s, when “The Shards,” based on the Bret Easton Ellis novel, takes place.
I grew up in Malibu, which felt like a small town. So I didn't have that "going to school in LA" feeling that we portray in "The Shards."
Bret Easton Ellis' novel is partly autobiographical, but there is also a fictional plot about a serial killer who is ravaging the city. Ryan Murphy has adapted the book for television and it has already been confirmed that a second season will be made.
Hard on oneself
Kaia Gerber, 24, plays Susan, who is one of the teenagers in the gang.
"When you're a teenager, you're hard on yourself and eager to grow up quickly. Then you realize it flew by and you should have enjoyed it more," she says.
Gerber met Bret Easton Ellis before it became clear that "The Shards", as the novel is called in Swedish, would be made into a television series.
"It was just after it came out and I told him how much I liked the book and what he had written before. He said he thought I reminded him of Susan and I laughed at that," she says.
“Resembled Susan”
But when the series was finished, she realized that the author had seen something she herself did not understand.
He saw that I resembled Susan in a way that I didn't. I think I read the book at least four times before I knew the series was going to be made.
Was there anything you thought differentiated society from just over 40 years ago from what it looks like today?
Well, not least the lack of mobile phones. Back then, you had to sit down and communicate in real life instead of immediately starting to study the virtual world.
"The Shards" is a thick book and Ryan Murphy will now further develop the characters from how they are portrayed by Bret Easton Ellis.
"I'm really looking forward to filming again. It's about what I love most - film, television and literature," says Kaia Gerber.
“The Shards” premieres on Disney+ on August 6th.
