Katainen will, among other things, help develop an updated EU policy for the Arctic region and work closely with the European Commission, the member states and, not least, the EU office in Greenland's capital, Nuuk, the Commission says in a press release.
The 54-year-old Katainen was Finland's Prime Minister from 2011-14 and then European Commissioner for Jobs and Growth until 2019.
