The ever-growing family of acronyms used in the climate context has a new addition. BAM – Belém action mechanism – is a proposal for a just transition to a low-carbon economy.

Today's energy system is largely based on extractive and polluting industries that hit some people hard – often those who work or live closest to them. Proponents of BAM believe that a mechanism is needed to demand that countries take concrete steps for a just transition, so that workers and entire communities are not left behind.

The promoters achieved a major success earlier this week when countries, including China and the G77 countries, which together represent about 80 percent of the world's population, signaled support for such a proposal.
