Just Stop Oil is planning a final large demonstration in central London on April 26, they say – but then they will take off their reflective vests.
The decision is said to be a consequence of the group having got the British government to stop approving new oil and gas projects.
Just Stop Oil was founded in 2022 and has received both criticism and praise for its notable protest actions for the climate.
Among other things, members of the group threw tomato soup at Vincent van Gogh's famous painting "Sunflowers" at the National Gallery in London in October 2022 – and glued themselves to the wall next to the painting. The painting had a glass shield and was not damaged in connection with the action.
In June last year, they sprayed orange paint, allegedly cornstarch, on the prehistoric stone structure Stonehenge in southwestern England. It was described as an attempt to get the new government in London to promise to phase out fossil fuels by 2030.
Since taking office in 2024, the Labour government has ended all new prospecting licenses for oil and gas in the North Sea and closed Britain's last coal-fired power plant. Prime Minister Keir Starmer denies, however, that the climate activists have had an influence on the decisions.
