Diddy Denied Bail After Conviction for Prostitution Offense

Hiphop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs is convicted of prostitution offense, but acquitted of the more serious charges of human trafficking and extortion. Combs' application to be released on bail was however rejected by the judge among other things with reference to his violent history.

The verdict came after three days of deliberations. Combs is convicted of prostitution offenses after paying male sex workers to participate in sexual activities. The sentence will be announced later.

But the jury acquits Combs of sex trafficking and extortion related to allegations that he used his money and status to manipulate his girlfriends to participate in hundreds of drug-filled sex marathons with men. According to Combs' lawyers, the women participated voluntarily.

Risks long sentence

But the 55-year-old Combs still risks up to ten years in prison for the charge he was convicted of and probably his career as a music producer, fashion entrepreneur, and reality TV star is over.

When the jury's decision was read out in the courtroom in Manhattan, New York, Combs bowed his head, clenched his fists in his lap, and then brought his hands together in a prayer. At one point, he looked up at the ceiling and seemed to express deep relief.

He shook hands with and hugged one of his lawyers.

Massive coverage

The trial against the 55-year-old Combs has been going on since May 5, and has been enormously noticed worldwide. No cameras or TV cameras have been allowed in the court, but media reporting has still been massive during the eight weeks the trial has lasted.

34 people have testified against him, and from the witness stand, he has been accused of, among other things, rape, sexual abuse, and sexual exploitation. But what he was charged with is a case of extortion, two cases of sex trafficking, and two cases of trafficking.

Has denied crimes

On Tuesday evening, the jury announced that they had agreed on a verdict for four of the five charges against the hip-hop mogul. It was the charge of extortion - in English "racketeering", crimes committed as part of organized crime - that the jury needed more time to deliberate on.

In connection with so-called "freak-offs", parties with drugs and sexual elements, he had, according to the charges, assaulted both women and a couple of boys over a period of over 20 years. A total of over 120 people have accused Combs of crimes.

Combs, who was arrested in September last year, has denied crimes but admitted to being violent against his ex-girlfriend during an incident that was caught on film in 2016. He himself has not testified during the trial.
