The company was sued by the state of New Mexico in 2023. According to the lawsuit, Meta violated the state's consumer protection laws and misled residents about how secure the company's apps are.
New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez has previously said that a fake profile created by investigators, which was said to be that of a 13-year-old girl, was completely flooded with images and offers from perpetrators.
A jury has now ordered Meta to pay $375 million in damages. According to the jury, the company concealed what it knew about the dangers of sexual exploitation of children on its platforms, AP reports.
"We disagree with the verdict and will appeal," a Meta spokesperson said.
